How to Identify If A Staffing Firm Is The Right One For You

We’ve interviewed each our Staffing Specialists at The CRS Group to compile this list of what you should be looking for when starting to work with a Staffing Firm, along with what advice they have for job seekers.


How do you think a job seeker can recognize a good Staffing Firm?

By their communication – A good staffing firm is one that clearly communicates all of the relevant information about the position as well as the client’s expectations. The Recruiter should tell you what it means to be a contractor with their firm, including all the details of the contract. If you ask them a question about the role, and they don’t know the answer, they should be able to get it from their team. They should have consistent communication with you. A Recruiter should be easy to get a hold of or should be getting back to you within 24 hours.

Your Recruiter should be trying to build a relationship with you – As a Recruiter, we should be asking you how much or little this position piques your interest, and we should also be inquisitive about what you do or do not like about each role we present to you. We should let you know you’re allowed to interview other places, because ultimately, we want what is best for you, not just a placement. Your Recruiter should also be going out of their way to understand your needs as a job seeker, and giving professional advice and suggestions along the way. They should make it clear that they care about whether or not you get a job, or if you succeed in your job search by recommending you to the right job for you, even if it’s not with us. Our goal is to build a community, and help people to find the right job for them.

By the quality and knowledge of their clients – We have to work hard to stay in our clients’ programs. In order to keep our Fortune 500 clients happy, we have to provide top quality candidates. If a Staffing Firm only works with a few quality clients, then that’s all the programs that they can get into, which may be a red flag. If they work with a dozen, we’d say that’s a green flag. Also, you want to pay attention to what information a Recruiter can provide you with outside of the Job Description. If they have a solid, long term commitment to their clients, they will know more about the positions they fill. They should be knowledgeable about their clients.

A good reputation and presence – Look up the Staffing Firm; where is their physical location? What does their website look like? What do their Glassdoor reviews say? You want to make sure that they are a reputable firm.  Have they won any awards in the Staffing Industry; if so, how many and how often? You also should look up and connect with the LinkedIn page of the Recruiter reaching out to you. The Firm’s social media content, reviews online and recommendations, can help you determine if this is a company/Recruiter you can trust. Do some research on the company and understand their values and do the values align with yours?  Who are their clients and what are their values?


Advice To Job Seekers:

Keep your resume updated – Keep your master copy of your resume updated, and be sure to proof read and edit it. Use complete sentences. Identify specifics about time, details, products, etc. and be as specific and detailed as possible. A good Recruiter will help you tailor your resume to a job.  All positions should have the month and year of work on the resume.  After starting a new position add that position to your resume. With that, make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated as well. You can just copy and paste pieces of your resume into LinkedIn profile. And of course, make sure you have a valid phone number and email address set up and be sure to include your contact information on your resume, LinkedIn, and any job posting sites that you may use.

Keep an open mind – Don’t shut down the idea of working a contract or contract to hire position, because often times, there’s a chance of getting converted to a permanent employee once the contract duration is over. Don’t only look for your “perfect job”, especially if you’ve been laid off or have not worked in quite some time. You need to work in between positions, because if there’s too big of a gap on your resume, there will be questions about your employment history from future employers and this could be viewed negatively. Another thing with contracting, often times you can learn new tools or skillsets that you may not have exposure to in a permanent position. A lot of companies are starting employees as contractors, and we are seeing less and less “permanent” positions, so it’s in your best interest to be open to a Recruiter’s advice in regards to market information, as well as what to add or remove from your resume.

Use every outlet possible – If you’re an active job seeker, you can’t just rely on LinkedIn or two job boards. You should be doing everything possible to seek out opportunities, including being active on LinkedIn. Those who find a job quickly, tend to use the job market well. Connect with and talk to as many people as possible, try to gain knowledge from everywhere, especially from Recruiters. Get your name out there.

Be patient and job search at your own pace – Don’t get overwhelmed with the amount of jobs or the amount of people that you talk to. Keep track of what you’re applying to, and who you’re talking to, and keep track of all the details. Make sure you are following up, and stay invested in places you’ve applied to.

Keep learning – You’re never too old to learn, so seek out online training courses or certifications that are relevant to your field. Learn how to use Microsoft office. Stay on top of your tool-set.

Be honest with Recruiters – Don’t just say what you think we want to hear. Be honest about what you want and would accept. Don’t settle.

Ask for updates and follow up – It shows that you are invested and interested. Follow-up on applications and interviews. Say the name of the person you are speaking to, as it shows you know who they are. We know you work with a lot of people, but if you want to build that relationship, you need to have a personal connection with your Recruiter; it will get you further in your job search. Sell yourself, highlight your background, have your resume reflect what you have done, and tell people about it. Have a selling statement, and be honest and realistic with your goals.
